FengYun-2E (FY-2E) Delivered in Orbit
05/25/2009

BEIJING, May 19 -- China National Space Administration (CNSA) organized the FY-2E Meteorological Satellite in-orbit delivering ceremony, in which China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) and China Satellite Launch, Telemetry and Control General (CLTC) formally delivered the satellite to China Meteorological Administration (CMA).

In the delivering ceremony, Mr. SUN Laiyan, Administrator of China National Space Administration (CNSA), said, China government paid great attention to the development of FY-2 series of GEO meteorological satellites, the application of which will play important role on the economic construction, social development and popular lives. Until now, 5 FY-2 series satellites (FY-2A, B, C, D, E) have been launched successfully, and 3 satellites in them (FY-2C, D,E) are in operation presently. FY-2E has been operating smoothly after launched, realized all functions, and the in-orbit test results of every functions and performances reached the General Requirements of Development. The performances are better those of FY-2C, D.

Mr. YU Rucong, Deputy Administrator of CMA, said, the year of 2008 is a milestone in the history of China meteorological satellites developments, two meteorological satellites were launched in 2008. The space-based FY meteorological satellites system is the key parts of China comprehensive meteorological observation system, they supports the development of modern meteorological activities.

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has brought the FY satellites into the global operational meteorological satellites list, and the FY satellites are the important members of global comprehensive observation system. FY-2E will replace FY-2C which has exceeded its duty time in due date.

FY-2E was launched on December, 23, 2008, and was located at E 123.5 on December, 27. After its location, CMA carried out the in-orbit test with satellite producer, Xi’an Satellite Telemetry and Control Center and National Satellite Meteorological Center (NSMC). It passed through the in-orbit test review on February, 28, 2009 after two months of test and operational estimation. After the in-orbit test, FY-2E also passed through the star erosion, every system operated smoothly, and has been transferred to in-orbit storage mode.

The FY-2E Project is combined with the following 5 major systems: satellite, launch vehicle, launching site, telemetry and control, ground application. CNSA  is responsible for organizing and managing the whole project. The satellites was developed and produced mainly by Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST), the LM-3A launch vehicle was developed and produced mainly by China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), the launch telemetry and control were managed by CLTC, and National Satellite Meteorological Center (NSMC) of CMA is responsible for construction and management of ground application systems.
