A rainstorm has severely hit Chongqing Municipality since July 16, 2006. The people in the disaster-stricken area suffered from huge life and property loss. To acquire remote sensing data of the severely affected area for disaster monitoring and evaluation, China National Space Administration and National Disaster Reduction Center of China reinitiated the mechanism after obtaining the remote sensing data in the disaster-stricken areas in Anhui and Sichuan via “International Charter ‘Space and Major Disaster’” for the first time on July 13, to collect space data and information related to the affected area in Chongqing by leveraging satellite resources of its membership institutions.

The mechanism responded rapidly and offered the 1st-batch data on July 20. National Disaster Reduction Center of China has utilized the acquired data to produce emergency products, which work as important decision-making reference for relevant governmental departments to carry out emergency rescue.
