In the morning of November 8, the unveiling ceremony of selenographic Sinus Iridum local image taken by Chang’e-2 lunar probe was held at Beijing. Mr. Wen Jiabao, the Prime Minister of the State Council attended the ceremony, and unveiled the image in person.

  At 10:00 am, Mr. Wen Jiabao express his sincere regard to the representatives of Chang’e-2 R&D staffs, and take a group photo to mark the occasion.

  Soon later, Mr. Wen Jiabao watched work report film of Chang’e-2 at the conference hall, and listened to the report of lunar probe program given by Mr. Chen Qiufa, the Administrator of China National Space Administration (CNSA).

October 1, Chang’e-2 was successfully launched. As a precursor of the second stage of China’s Lunar Probe Program, the target of Chang’e-2 is to finish some key technical experiment for Chang’e-3 to realize soft landing, as well as to go on with lunar probing. October 9, Chang’e-2 was delivered in 100km lunar orbit. According to the plan, Chang’e-2 carried out several science experiment and in-orbit testing, and then lowers the orbit to image the district of selenographic Sinus Iridum. The Sinus Iridum, picked as Chang’e-3’s landing area, is 300 meters from east to west and 100 meters from north to south, and is located at 43°N and 31°W.

  At 10：18 am, Mr. Wen Jiabao come to the platform to unveil the image of Sinus Iridum in worm applause.

This local image of Selenographic Sinus Iridum was taken at 6:25 pm, October 28, when the satellite was 18.7km high above the lunar surface with the resolution of 1.3m. The image is centered at 31°3’E and 43°4’N. The real area is about 8 kilometers from east to west and 15.9 kilometers from north to south. According to the image, this area is covered with basalt. Although distributed with pits and stones, including a biggest crater which is 2 kilometers in diameter, this area is relatively smooth. This image’s sending back indicates the achievement of the engineering goal defined in the Chang’e-2 mission. We are on the way to realize the science goal. The Chang’e-2 mission of the second stage of Lunar Probe Program achieves complete success.

  Mr. Zhang Dejiang, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the CPC, Vice-Prime Minister of the State Council read the congratulatory telegram for Chang’e-2 mission of Lunar Probe Program from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the State Council, the Military Commission of the Central Committee of CPC.

  This telegram expresses the worm congratulation and sincere regard to all the related scientific and technological workers, cadres and PLA officers from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the State Council, the Military Commission of the Central Committee of CPC!

  In the telegram, it is said that, the development of outer space exploration technology and the peacefully utilization of the space is our consistent pursuit. Under the guidance of the Party Central Committee represented by president Hu Jintao, Chinese people should stick to Deng Xiaoping theory and “Three represents”, implement Scientific Outlook on Development, expand “hydrogen bomb and artificial satellite” and “manned space flight” spirits, keep up the good work, forge ahead, strive to make greater contribution for promoting “Twelfth five years” economy blossom and building well-off society in an all-around way, as well for bringing about a great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
